last night the person driving the cab that safely delivered me home had a shock when he turned on the light so that i could count change- facepaint! streaks of white and black around the eyes, forehead and chin and rainbow trailing my cheek… what to think? he stared. i counted. looked up and he asked, “is that religious?”
i paused. wanted to say yes. but feared it might lead to more questions and how could i explain?
ritual? yes. adornment? yes. mask? yes. art? yes. fun? yes. religious – in a sense but potentially not we both understood it in the ‘common’ sense.
but still perhaps, religion – the kind of religion that honors ritual and play. the kind of religion that questions authority and calls forth all revolutionaries. the kind of religion that grows from the act of trust and faith in an infinitely abundant universe.
so yes. in a sense.
